God is always speaking and sometimes He uses some very unusual ways to connect with us. This photograph was taken at the Mikumi game reserve in Tanzania on our last afternoon in Africa. After a week of work, we set aside our last day to go on safari. This wasn’t why I went on the trip, but let me be honest, it was one of the parts of the trip that I was most excited about.
At the end of our brief afternoon excursion into the reserve, the backdrop of an amazing African sunset silhouetted the twisted branches of the few Baoboa trees that dotted the terrain. The first time I saw this photograph, the words “He speaks” came to mind.
There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight – why the bush does not burn up.” Exodus 3:2-3
Talk about an attention getter! And what Moses heard God say to him during that encounter was even more of a shocker. This enslaved by birth, adopted prince turned shepherd, was about to have a new God-given moniker – deliverer.
But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” And God said, “I will be with you.” Exodus 3:11-12a
This was a defining moment for Moses. He could have walked right off that mountain and kept on tending sheep, explaining his encounter as the result of dehydration and too much mountain air. His response wasn’t perfect. And it makes me realize that God isn’t looking for perfection. He’s looking for an open, curious heart that is willing to hear from Him in unconventional ways and then act on it.
What does it take for God to get us to stop and investigate what he is trying to communicate to us? He is a God who not only speaks, but a God who walks beside us. It may be sheer curiosity that has caused you to check out Spiritual Prescription. I pray that he is using it to speak to those who come by here.
Today’s prayer: Lord, I want to be open to you speaking to me in surprising ways. I want a listening heart that is curious and willing. Do something unexpected today that reminds me of your constant care and presence in my life.
