This week kicked off “National Men’s Health Week,” which ends with Father’s Day on Sunday.
The goal of this week is to heighten awareness of preventable male health problems and to encourage early detection and treatments of heart disease, specific cancers and stroke. A nutrient rich diet and a healthy lifestyle are a good start to defend against these diseases.
The following are some tips to provide health benefits to all men, no matter what their age:
- Fill half your plate with fruits or vegetables.
- Try to include tomatoes or something made from tomatoes, like pasta sauce, because research indicates that the antioxidant Lycopene found in tomato products may help to prevent prostate cancer.
- Eat whole grains for the benefit of fiber.
- Try to include two servings of fish per week. Choose lean, choice or select meats, instead of prime, and grilled turkey dogs and veggie burgers in place of full-fat options.
- Choose unsaturated fats like canola or olive oil, nuts and seeds, instead of saturated fats like full-fat dairy products, butter and high-fat sweets.
- Make sure to get adequate potassium in your daily diet (4700mg). Potassium is found in fruits, vegetables and milk
- Limit sodium to 2300 mg day which is about 1 teaspoon.
